AUGUSTA, GA---The man charged with murdering a Murphey Middle school teacher has a hearing in court on Thursday. Police say, 22-year-old David Drayton attacked Linda Gail Hendrick nearly eight years ago inside her special ed classroom. She died in May, after spending all those years in a coma.
For the first time since her death, her fiancé speaks out. It's been nearly two months after his fiancé's death but Ken Gordon still struggles to hold back the tears. "It's rough at times," he said.
Linda Gail Hendrick died in May from complications of a brutal attack back in 1999 by one of her own students. Then 14-year-old David Drayton was convicted of beating her head against the floor and then stabbing her more than 70 times with a pair of scissors which ultimately left her in a coma ever since.
Back then, Gordon was a math teacher working just down the hall from his fiancé when she was attacked. "She was talking and named David as the attacker not only at the school but at the hospital," he said. While he says these last seven-and-a-half years have been the longest years of his life he's had the strength of God to carry him through. "I have a lot of peace within me because I have God that's comforting," Gordon said.
Still after watching Gail struggle for her life and seeing her attacker serve five years for the crime he says, there's one thing he knows for sure, that's if Gail were still here today, she wouldn't have held a grudge. "I know Gail forgave him no doubt in my mind about that," he said. Even though one day he says he'll eventually have closure there's only one looming question still on his mind. "Why? I just want to ask him why," he said.
Drayton was indicted by a grand jury earlier this month, he's scheduled to be back in court for an arraignment hearing on Thursday for the murder of Linda Gail Hendrick.
