WILLISTON, S.C. (WRDW) -- Sam Holmes and others are out on a cold Monday morning to help a neighbor and friend.
"Well, you know, I think there's still some good people. There's still some bad people," he says.
Pellets of glass and broken hinges are a reminder of Saturday morning's terror.
"Looks like the bad people are outshining the good people," adds Holmes.
Williston Police Department says the 86-year-old who normally lives in a mobile on Paul Street woke up and noticed two shadowy figures and the glow of a flashlight on his porch. In just seconds, police say the men broke through, then brutally beat 86-year-old Glover Sapp for thirty minutes, until they found his wallet.
"I understand that he did not want to give up his wallet, so I could understand that. Who wants to give up their money? And when they beat him to that point, I guess it knocked him out, and then at about seven, eight, or nine o'clock the next morning, then he came over to my sister's house, and that's when my sister called me," says Holmes.
Holmes couldn't believe what he saw. Police say Sapp was left for dead.
"I could not recognize him. If I didn't know who he was, I could not say that was Mr. Glover. Couldn't recognize him," he says.
"But anybody who would beat up an old man like that, you know, something would have to be wrong with them," adds another friend, Ethel Brown.
Monday, as Sapp recovers with family in Columbia, these church friends built a new door for the man who would do the same for them.
"He never bothered anybody," says Holmes. "He goes downtown everyday, and he comes back home in the afternoon or at night, and no complaints. Nothing."
They say Sapp is doing better. They're also praying the two suspects will soon be brought to justice.
"And I really hope the police keep doing what they're doing now, so they can be caught," says Brown.
Williston Police Department is working diligently. Investigator Rodney Pruitt says his department does have some leads they're working on. They're also lifting some possible fingerprints too.
Friends say this was the third home invasion and robbery for Sapp.
