AUGUSTA, Ga. -- University Hospital officials are facing tough questions after a man brought in a gun and fatally shot his nephew in a patient's room.

The suspect, 85-year-old Charles Gorrell, made his first courtroom appearance on Wednesday.

When Gorrell walked into the courtroom, he walked slowly and had to be moved closer to the bench after he could barely hear Judge Stephen Shepherd.

The state alleges Gorrell shot his nephew, Tim Grooms, twice in the chest with a .38-caliber revolver. Investigators say he then put the gun down and surrendered.

This all happened inside a room on the seventh floor of University Hospital where Gorrell's wife was being treated.

News 12 learned Gorrell's wife has pneumonia and is expected to be released on Friday. She physically can't speak and needs assistance to walk.

Gorrell asked the judge for bond so he could care for his wife.

"We thought maybe I could get on bond to help, but you just told me I'm not going to," Gorrell said.

"Not from this judge, no sir," the judge replied.

Gorrell also complained about the handcuffs, saying they were bruising his delicate skin. He asked the judge what the degrees of killing someone were.

Ultimately, the judge deferred the case because it is murder.
