AUGUSTA, Ga.---An 18-year-old is behind bars charged with murdering his girlfriend. Authorities say Jatavious Laron January shot and killed 18-year-old Samara Jones at her apartment.
It's believed that Jones and January argued before the shooting. What the argument was about is still under investigation.
January turned himself in to authorities a few hours after the shooting, but it's still unclear exactly why this homicide happened.
Cries and screams filled the air at Cedar Grove Apartments this afternoon as friends and family learned the news of Samara Jones' murder. They were all too upset to go on camera. Neighbors were speechless as well.
"Sad," said Elizabeth Luna, who lives across the street and was home at the time of the shooting. She says that she didn't know Jones, but says even so, something like this affects the whole community.
"That's something that made me feel like crying," she said.
According to investigators, Samara Jones and Jatavious January were in a relationship but were in the process of breaking up. January turned himself into authorities three hours after the shooting, and now investigators are questioning him as to what happened in the moments that led up to Jones' death.
But residents like Elizabeth Luna simply want the senseless shootings to end.
"We have to do something to stop that, you know," she said.
January has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm in commission of a crime. No word on whether bail will be set for him.
