Homeowner shoots ATV thief

June 25, 2007

GRANITEVILLE, S.C.---A Graniteville homeowner decided to fight back when he caught a thief in the act.

Aiken County deputies say Leonel Sanchez shot through a bathroom window in his mobile home, and the bullet struck 18-year-old Jack Cooper as he was walking through the yard.

Investigators say Sanchez caught Cooper and two others trying to steal an ATV from his yard.

A witness later spotted Cooper kneeling on the side of Bettis Academy Road.

Cooper is being charged with attempted grand larceny and possession of a firearm by someone under 21. 22-year-old Charles Oglesby, also of Graniteville, is charged with attempted grand larceny.

Officers say a 16-year-old was also involved, but was released to relatives.
