Aiken, SC---There's been a rash of break-ins in one south side Aiken neighborhood. It happened in the Gem Lakes neighborhood that's just off Silver Bluff Road. Police say some people are making it even easier for thieves to steal your stuff.

Charles Spencer's truck was stolen right out of his own driveway. "I came home and parked my truck but I didn't lock it," he said. According to the police report Spencer told officers he may have even left the keys still in the truck. "It was a slip up, I was tired and left it open, I usually put it in the garage," Spencer said. Just a block away four more of his neighbors were hit on Saturday night, all of them on the same street on Lakeside Drive. "We had a number of break-ins over the weekend, some were by force others were not," said Aiken Public Safety Officer, Lt. David Turno.

Two other victims admitted to officers they also believe they left their doors unlocked, in one case the thieves got away with $100 he left in the console of his SUV, another realized the next morning his 9 millimeter handgun with two loaded magazines were nowhere to be found. Officers say that's what they call a crime of opportunity. "Just takes moments, doesn't take long at all, in less than a minute they can be in a car and out especially if something is in plain view to be taken," he said. An expensive lesson, Spencer wishes he never had to learn. "I miss my truck that's my baby."

Lt. Turno says they don't have a description on the possible suspects in the latest rash of break-ins so he advises everyone to keep their doors locked and keep an eye on who's coming in and out of your neighborhood.
