AUGUSTA, Ga.---Sheriff's office substations are designed to keep crime down in some areas and make it easier for deputies to do their job, but neighbors in some high-crime areas say the police presence they once had is gone.

There are about 30 substations in Richmond County, typically situated in high-crime areas. But some neighbors in those areas say that while the crime is up, the presence in the substations is down.
