AUGUSTA, Ga.---A FedEx delivery man got the scare of a lifetime: a homemade bomb in a drop box. It happened last night just after 6:30 in front of the Kellogg's cereal plant on Marvin Griffin Road.

Just after 6:30 the delivery driver noticed an unusual package that rolled out of the drop box.

"Six bottles of water duct taped together with a fuse hanging out of it and gasoline on it," Sgt. Richard Roundtree told News 12.

While investigators say the homemade bomb never actually exploded, 100 employees at the nearby cereal plant had to be evacuated for nearly two hours.

The Richmond County bomb squad used their mobile robot to move the bomb to a safe location, but Sgt. Roundtree says it's still too early to tell just what it was capable of doing.

"We don't know if it was an active device that could be exploded or were they just put together for a hoax or a scare tactic," he said.

What they do know is that it had the ability to become flammable...and as nails were found inside the water bottles to be used as possible projectiles, he says it could've have easily killed anyone standing nearby.

None of the employees at the Kellogg's plant was injured last night when it all happened. Everyone returned to work safely.

Investigators say now that they have a better idea of what they're dealing with here, they want to know where it came from and why.

I recommend that all mailboxes be modified with an added small camera and a black box recording device for 24 hour survellence. These cameras can be very small and the black box could have flash memory chips similar to flash drives on the commerical market.
