AUGUSTA, Ga.---Traffic on Tobacco Road was blocked for a few hours last night after Richmond County firefighters arrived at the scene of a house fire and made a disturbing discovery.

A 62-year old man was found dead, lying outside the house near the blaze.

Authorities say he didn't die in the fire, nor did he die of smoke inhalation. They believe he was killed before the fire even started.

"Upon further investigation we discovered that the subject appeared to have died from trauma to the head," Sgt. Richard Roundtree told News 12. "Blunt force trauma to the head."

Sgt. Roundtree says the victim lived alone and there was no one else at the home at the time.

"Right now, we are investigating this as an active homicide," he said. "It appears the fire is arson, used as a cover up to the homicide."
