Knife attack at Clearwater Hardee's

March 14, 2007

CLEARWATER, S.C.---The Aiken County Sheriff's Department is looking for a suspect in connection with a knife attack at the Hardee's on Highway 1.

Deputies say a man in a red jumpsuit went to 76-year-old Walter Penningtons house in Graniteville at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, wanting a ride to the Clearwater Hardee's. The victim prepared to turn into the parking lot when the subject suddenly instructed him to keep driving. Pennington refused, so the individual became angry and slashed the victim twice across the neck with a knife.

“We found out from our investigation this individual attended a yard sale a week earlier at the victim’s home, which is why Mr. Pennington was willing to give him a ride to the fast food restaurant,” said Sheriff Michael Hunt.

The attacker then jumped out of the victim’s white, Toyota pickup truck and ran across the parking lot and into the woods behind the shopping center.

Aiken County Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to Aiken Regional Medical Centers. ACSO and the Aiken Bloodhound Tracking Team set up a perimeter and searched the area.

If you have any information on the suspect, call the Aiken County Sheriff's Department.
