AIKEN, S.C.---Seven men and six women are in federal custody tonight charged with using false green cards to gain employment at an Aiken plant.
The 13 were arrested last Thursday (February 22) at Carlisle Wheel and Tire. Police say more than a dozen Hispanic employees used false documents to get jobs there.
It all started last November when a woman reported identity theft. That's when authorities found tons of counterfeit green cards.
They say there is reason to believe they were generated locally.
The 13 were indicted as John Doe or Jane Doe last week. All of them pled not guilty.
Carlisle Wheel and Tire will not be facing any charges.
"I've known some of those folks, managers at Carlisle Tire, for quite some time," Sheriff Michael Hunt said. "They've always done the right thing... to cooperate."
Sheriff Hunt credits the multiple agencies involved here.
Their job is not done. They're still checking out other plants for any illegal workers.
If found guilty, all 13 suspects will face deportation.
