SUWANEE, Ga. (AP) -- Authorities say a gunman who had been holding 5 firefighters hostage in Northeast Georgia has been shot dead by SWAT team members.
Minutes before the police announcement, one big explosion followed by several smaller ones or gunshots were heard in the Suwanee neighborhood about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta.
All the hostages are slightly injured, but should be OK. One SWAT team member was shot in the hand according to Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter.
This afternoon the gunman, who has not been identified, barricaded himself inside a home holding five firefighters hostage.
The firefighters originally responded to a medical call at the home.
Fire department Capt. Tommy Rutledge says the medical call seemed routine and firefighters did not believe there was any danger.
One fireman was released during the standoff to move a firetruck. Four remained inside the house.
Information on a possible motive was not immediately available.
