AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The three teenagers accused of breaking out of the Augusta Youth Development Campus nearly a month ago were in front of a juvenile court judge on Thursday morning.

The three youths, two 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old, came in with their attorneys and a number of guards. Those who saw the proceedings say there was heavy security at the request of the new director.

Judge Jennifer McKinzie explained the court process to the boys, but the judicial system is something they are familiar with already, as two of them were in custody for robbery and the other for terroristic threats.

Now, all three of them are charged with escape, which is a felony offense.

The teenagers admitted to escaping from the YDC on Oct. 19 in court Thursday morning.

According to the personnel file of former YDC Director Ronald Brawner, a broken lock that went unreported was part of the reason the juveniles were able to escape.

The trio is part of a larger group of five who escaped. The other two are not in juvenile court and are accused of taking a car right after escaping.

The three teenagers will be sentenced in their home counties where the court has their history, school records and families nearby.

One of the teenagers is from the Valdosta area and another is from the Dekalb County area.

Sentencing will take place within 10 to 30 days. The maximum sentence for a juvenile would be 5 years.

Right now, the inmates are back in the YDC but will most likely be separated when they are sentenced for their felony offense of escape.
