EDGEFIELD, S.C.--- A man, his wife, and her teenage daughter are dead in an apparent double murder-suicide.
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter says the stepfather is believed to be the suspect. He was found dead lying beside his wife's bed, shot once.
Chief Carter identifies the victims as his 34-year-old wife and her teenage daughter. Both were found dead in their beds, each shot twice.
Chief Carter says they believe the crime happened sometime Tuesday morning. He says the stepfather got his other three stepchildren off to school, before turning a pistol on the family and himself.
Officers say the other children arrived home from school Tuesday afternoon and couldn't get inside the home. That's when one of the children called their grandmother who came down to the home and went inside to find the gruesome scene.
She alerted a neighbor who called 9-1-1 around 4:45 pm.
Edgefield Police called in SLED who processed the scene well into the night. The three bodies were taken to the county hospital, they will be transported to Newberry for an autopsy Wednesday morning.
The other three children, ages 7,11, and 15 are staying with relatives.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the suspect, pending notification of family members.
Chief Carter says there is no known motive at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
