AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- One person is dead, and two others are in the hospital after a shooting around 9:30 a.m.Tuesday.

It all happened on the 3500 block of Biltmore Place near the Meadowbrook neighborhood in south Augusta.

A lot of people, like Shenitia Martin in the neighborhood, heard the gunshots and saw the chaotic scene.

"Then I heard 'pow, pow,' and then it was like, 'pow pow!' After so many seconds."

D'Lario Vance also heard the shots.

"I thought it was just, you know, people shooting up in the air, testing their guns or whatever. I didn't know it was this," he said.

The call came in reporting a shooting with one person injured, but when deputies got to the 3500 block of Biltmore Place, they discovered three people had been shot and taken to the hospital. One of them died.

"I came up this way and that's when I seen the young lady on the ground," Martin said.

Jermaine Evans also heard the gunshots, a sound that hit a little too close to home for him.

"I know what them gunshots mean," he said.

Six years ago, Evans was shot in a drive-by shooting. The injury left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Hearing the gunshots so close to home brings back a flood of old memories.

"I know what they're going through, so all I can do is put my heart to them," he said.

The murder has the entire neighborhood on high alert.

"This don't always happen. We have crime out here, but not anything like this," Martin said.

Deputies found 52-year-old Steve Lawrence Allen in Toombs County. But, even with a suspect in custody, the people who saw this scene unfold are worried for the safety of their neighborhood.

"I'm kinda worried because it is a neighborhood full of children, young children at that. I have two myself ... it's going to leave the neighborhood kind of shook up for a minute, but, you know, we're going to bounce back," Vance said.

Charges are still pending in the case.
