AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Deputies are still looking for a murder suspect from early Tuesday morning. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots from a house on Massoit Drive off Barton Chapel Road. First responders arrived to find Shon Brooks dead.
Neighbor Camden Copning heard the gunshots.
"All the sudden, gunshots go, and you know, somebody calling for the ambulance, talkin' about, 'Somebody help and this that and the other.'"
It happened just after midnight Monday night. Copning says the gunshots were completely out of the blue.
"It was just a typical evening night, you know. It was quiet, it was, you know, peaceful. You know you got the old people over here going to sleep already. Everybody else just relaxing. Just having a good evening."
But the sound of gunshots quickly shattered the silence, along with screams for an ambulance.
"Upon our arrival, we observed one victim who sustained a gunshot wound and subsequently passed as a result of the gunshot wound,"
Sgt. Michael McDaniel said.
The victim, 39-year-old Shon Brooks, died on the scene.
Copning was scared when she heard the gunshots.
"I thought it was going to be a shootout. I really thought, you know, all of us were in danger. So we hurried up and got back in the house and, you know, just played it cool 'til somebody arrived," Copning said.
Deputies aren't releasing much information about how the murder happened, but we do know they spent a lot of time gathering evidence from the front door. Neighbors say it was in perfectly good condition on Monday, and is now pretty beat up, which could possibly mean a struggle took place.
Neighbors now say they just hope whoever is responsible is caught, so they can have a little peace restored to their once quiet community.
"Justice needs to be served. And when they do serve it, it's gonna be good," Copning said.
Investigators are looking for a suspect around 6 feet tall, between 180 and 200 pounds. He is black with a light to medium complexion and a short haircut. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans while driving a black Chrysler 300.
