AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Federal navigators have been hired locally to help walk you through the enrollment process.

Terri Gant is one of two at Medical Associates Plus on Golden Camp Road. There are two more at Christ Community Health Services. Aiken County has one as well.

Gant says her goal is simple, "Education, education, education."

She's one of four federal navigators serving Richmond, Burke, and Jefferson Counties.

"The navigator is here to provide education to individuals, communities, small business owners about the process of enrolling into the Affordable Care Act," explained Gant.

She spends her days meeting with patients explaining how the law will affect them.

"Everyone's situation is different. Even as I talk to individuals every day. Just today I talked to a couple of people [with the] same number of household, same income and their situation is different," said Gant.

But she says a lot of the questions are the same. She says, "Most of the common questions are how much is my premium going to be? and I'm already sick will I be covered? Is there going to be a penalty for me being sick if I have a preexisting condition?."

Those are all things she's here to answer. She'll take each patient through the website Healthcare.gov to look at information specific to their situation.

"We're sitting down with them, going through the website showing them what we consider the easy version of understanding," explained Gant.

She says if you can't make it in to meet with them, the website can answer lots of your questions on its own.

"From being about the premiums to about the level of service, about the essential health benefits, about what does this enrollment mean to me," said Gant.

But she says the best way to learn is to just sign up.

"Just to go ahead and apply and figure out where you fall within the bracket," Gant explained.

Just by signing up that doesn't mean you are locked in to a plan.

Open enrollment is open from October 1st until March 31st.

Tuesday morning they will be in the parking lot at Medical Associates Plus from 830 until noon answering any questions. All you have to do is stop by.
