Joanie Curry says she is trapped because she can not afford health care premiums but does not qualify for Medicaid because she is too young. "I was kind of looking forward to this insurance thing that Obama has coming up," says Curry.

She was hopeful she could finally get health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act. "To this point kind of disappointed," says Curry. She cares for her aging husband, and right now his social security check is the only income for both of them," says Curry.

"I don't work because I am home taking care of my husband whose got lung cancer," says Curry.

But she wants to get her own health insurance coverage, so that if something should happen to her, her husband would be taken care of. "I was notified that I would possibly be no cost or low cost," says Curry.

Although under the Affordable Care Act she does not have to get insurance and would not have to pay a penalty. However she says premiums would run her between $300 to $400 a month. Something she admits she cannot afford. She is also too young for Medicaid under South Carolina guidelines.

Make affordable insurance available to everyone. "Last I looked I was part of that everyone," says Curry. She is concerned about the out-of-pocket cost of premiums however under the Affordable Care Act she has two options. If she qualifies for coverage she can get a tax credit at the end of the year or allow the government to pay her insurance company.

In South Carolina if you are an adult with no children and are not disabled you simply do not qualify under the current guidelines.
