Unemployment numbers for August are expected to be released Friday. In July, South Carolina reached 11.8 percent unemployment, well above the national average of 9.4 percent, and rated sixth-highest in the country.
The Cavalier Homes plant in Millen will shut down next month. Many of the 104 workers there have lost their jobs and the rest will leave in October. Town leaders say tax breaks were offered to the company but other factors were at work in leading to the closing.
