AUGUSTA, Ga. -- It took Pamela Brown two long years to find her current job as a custodian. After cleaning offices for a year, she's back looking for another job.
As Brown searched, she explained what she was looking for, "Something different to do, earning more money than what I'm earning today."
Brown's strict budget doesn't leave room for much after paying for groceries and gas.
Many job seekers are filling out applications and working on their resume for the same reason at the career center inside the Georgia Department of Labor in downtown Augusta.
James Abron, the manager of the Augusta Career Center explained, "They may be finding something with more stability."
And with 83,700 jobs added on in Georgia over a 12-month period, it maybe easier for Brown to land a job this time around. The latest unemployment numbers for Richmond County show January's unemployment inched up to 9.1 percent from 8.9 percent in December of 2011. Compared to a year ago, it's down two tenths of a percent; in January of 2011, it was at 9.3 percent.
"People are hiring out there. You have to be aggressive and persistent," Abron said.
Abron said our area has seen job growth in sectors like education, business and health services.
"Some of those jobs are in the nursing field, the health care field," he said.
It's news that Brown is happy to hear, now that she has a target.
"I have a better outlook of what it is I want to do right now," she said. "Textiles, perhaps, or maybe even office work."
With news of more jobs headed toward Augusta from places like the Starbucks plant, Brown said she hopes it won't take another two years to land a better job.
