AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Boral Bricks' production plants on Arthern Road in Augusta will be idled, affecting jobs for about 70 people, said President Bob Kepford. Other services at the location will continue, leaving around 100 employees.
According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the company filed a WARN letter Tuesday. A WARN letter is required when a layoff may last more than six months. Kepford says this was a precaution.
The plants are shutting down due to a surplus of product. Their bricks are used in new home construction which has slowed down. As a result, the surplus built up. Once the surplus is used up, they plan to re-open the plants.
Boral Brick idled plants back in 2008 due to the economy and reopened them in spring of 2009.
