BARNWELL COUNTY, S.C. -- The old Hanesbrands plant in Barnwell is empty. It closed back in 2009, and 300 people lost their jobs. The Allied Air plant just a few miles down the road in Blackville is also empty.
But, fortunately for local job seekers, those buildings are about to be filled again.
"The good news is that the Allied Air in Blackville and Hanesbrands in Barnwell -- those plants are going back into service," said Marty Martin, head of the Barnwell County Economic Development Commission.
Experts expect more than 200 jobs will come to the Allied Air plant over the next three years and the old Hanesbrands plant will start by hiring 50 people.
"All these jobs we're talking about are basically manufacturing jobs," Martin said.
Many manufacturing jobs were lost during the recession.
"When you have a plant that just recently closed and had over 300 employees, then all of the sudden you get an opportunity to replace a large majority of those jobs -- it energized a community," Martin explained.
He said these are important jobs.
"It's important that this country continues to make product, and I think that's the future of the economy as it comes back," he said. "We've got to get back to where we make stuff, create jobs in the manufacturing sector, and we can start exporting our products to other countries."
He said when we can do that again, America wins, and when we can do that here, the community wins.
"There's a multiplier effect when people go back to work and have income to spend, and most of those people spend it locally," Martin said. "Several hundred jobs in a county the size of Barnwell County is a significant win for all of us."
The two companies filling the old plants will be announced Wednesday. Martin told News 12 these companies should be hiring between the next few weeks and the end of the year.
