On Your Side: Workforce retraining can lead to thousands of available jobs

News 12 at 6 O'Clock, March 11, 2010

WAYNESBORO -- There are thousands of job listings. But some of those require training. And that's where the Richmond-Burke Job Training Authority comes in.

"I could say the phone is constantly ringing," said Fredrick Lloyd of the RBJTA.

It starts with a test. You must get your Georgia Work Ready Certificate. From there, it's part-classroom work, part hands-on training.

"It could be that they go through an apprenticeship program, it could be we have contracted out with providers that will provide specific type of training," added Lloyd.

You could also go back to school. Anything you want to specialize in through the Workforce Investment Act program is federally funded -- so there's no extra cost to you. You could be retrained in as little as a month.

The programs are about to expand, to Richmond and Burke counties. It comes at a perfect time as The Southern Company plans to hire many construction jobs for Plant Vogtle -- up to 3,500 jobs, says project manager David Jones.

"We'll have everything from pipe fitters to welders to iron workers to carpenters, all types of labor trades will be important to us as we go through this phased approach," he said.

But you don't have to wear a hard hat to get back to work. Just check with the RBJTA for info on how you can get retrained.

Go to for more information on the programs, including where you can take those recertification and retraining courses.

Currently, courses are offered in McDuffie Co., but the programs will soon be offered in Burke and Richmond counties.
