Local stores hiring holiday help

AUGUSTA, Ga.---It's hard to believe, but the holidays are just about here and that means stores are starting their seasonal hiring.

News 12 checked and most retail stores in the area are looking to hire some holiday help. News 12 takes a look at how a temporary job might help you.

Temporary jobs could be seasonal work or they could lead to much more. A permanent job with a permanent paycheck.

The countdown to holiday shopping is on. The malls are decorated and all that's left is to hire a handful of cheerful elves to help get the job done.

And if you find the right temporary job, it could lead to more.

Take Angela Marshall, she started as a temp 11 years ago and has been climbing the company ladder ever since. "My motto is you have to start somewhere, everybody started somewhere," says Marshall.

Georgia Personnel Services says most of their clients are looking for something that lasts longer than holiday cheer. "They want to go beyond just making money for the holidays," says Chief Operating Officer Monique Walker-Hill.

They say temp jobs are a win-win for both employees and employers. "It's definitely all in what you make it. They help you get the job but you know, you're the reason you stay there," says Marshall.

"Everybody gets to see if the employee is indeed a good fit, they get to try one another out," says Hill.

With so few jobs out there, just getting your foot in the door makes a difference. "In times like these with a recession where jobs are really hard to find you know if have to really want it and really exhaust all your options," says Marshall.

And if you need a little cash at Christmas, stores are looking for Santa's helpers, only maybe not as many as last season.

"The retailers are actually calling back old employees or those employees that have been laid off because they're already trained and familiar with their practices and policies," says Hill.

If you are looking for holiday or seasonal work, right now is the time to act. Stores at both the Aiken and Augusta Malls have said they are hiring but they want to fill those positions in just a few weeks, so don't wait.
