COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Relief is on the way for thousands of unemployed South Carolina residents who ran out of extended jobless benefits because a state law wasn't updated.
Gov. Mark Sanford signed an updated bill into law Thursday. The bill legislators quickly approved in a two-day meeting this week addresses the problem by tying benefits to the state's unemployment rate.
The Employment Security Commission estimates 15,000 people may have lost extended benefits they were eligible get during the past couple of weeks. The commission plans to send checks to people who qualify by next week.
Allen Larson runs the unemployment benefits program and says the federal extension allows an extra seven weeks of benefits.
