COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department has laid off 17 workers and ordered other employees to take three days off without pay because of budget cuts.

The State newspaper reports that agency spokesman Marion Edmonds said the workers' last day will be Feb. 16.

The layoffs are spread across the agency and will not result in any additional closings of state parks or welcome centers. The agency is closing offices in welcome centers on the state's interstate highways on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It laid off 40 temporary workers who help staff the welcome centers late last year. Rest rooms and vending areas remain open.

The I-20 Welcome Center near North Augusta is one of those affected by the Tuesday-Wednesday closings.
