BARNWELL, S.C.---Another economic blow to the Barnwell area.
Hanesbrands Inc. says it will close its Barnwell plant no later than the end of April. The means the loss of jobs for 310 people.
The company makes socks in that plant and says that production will move to a company plant in El Salvador.
Hanesbrand has operated the Barnwell plant since 1993 and hopes to sell the property. It also says it will provide separation and severance benefits and career transition help to the workers who soon will be out of jobs.
The is the second Barnwell textile plant closing announced recently.
In December, Milliken and Company announced it will close a plant, resulting in over 100 jobs lost.
Hanesbrands Inc. sells about 500 million pairs of socks a year. That
production will now be handled by the new El Salvador plant and one in Mount Airy, NC. The company employs about 50,000 people in more than 25 countries.
