SNELLING, S.C. --- A new zinc recycling plant is coming to Snelling in Barnwell County. It's going to mean up to 65 more jobs and $87 million into the economy.
"It feels like the small communities are the first to suffer and the last to recover," says Barnwell Business Owner Dennis Hutto. He is glad to know Barnwell County isn't the last to recover this time. There is construction going on now at the South Carolina Advanced Technology Park for Horsehead Corporation.
"The employees of the plant will be potential customers for us and the other industries in town," says Dennis.
This new project is a four county project with the Southern Carolina Alliance. Barnwell County Executive Director for the Economic Commission Marty Martin says, this could be a win-win.
"It revives our economy. It picks up everybody who's worried about what's going on with the national economy," says Martin.
It picks up spirits and hopefully gets people driving through Barnwell and the county. "We might not necessarily be the destination but we're a great pass through as we got great things for people to see as they come through," says Lynn Cox. She's the Barnwell Tourism Director.
It's a big investment to plug a hole in our economy. It's a plus that Dennis can't wait for. "The sooner, the better," he exclaims.
Horsehead Corporation is looking for general workers and those who are specialized in mechanical and electrical work. Head to the Barnwell County One Stop Office at 248 Wall Street in Barnwell. Their phone number is (803) 259 7116.
