AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Georgia Department of Labor announced on Thursday that metro Augusta’s unemployment rate went down to 7.6 percent in April, which is down from 7.9 percent in March. The rate was 8.2 percent in April a year ago.
The rate went down as the number of jobs in metro Augusta increased by 3,700 to 218,800, up from 215,100 in March. Over the year, metro Augusta added 2,700 jobs in April 2012. Most of the growth was in education and health services.
Also from the Georgia Department of Labor, the unemployment rate in the Central Savannah River Area declined to 8.6 percent in April, down from 8.7 percent in March. The rate was 8.9 percent in April a year ago.
Georgia’s unemployment rate for April was 8.2 percent, down from 8.4 percent in March. The rate was 9.1 percent in April a year ago.
