Postal Service delays closings until next year

Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a press release Tuesday, the U.S. Postal Service agreed to delay the closing or consolidation of any Post Office or mail processing facility until May 15, 2012.

A request was made by several U.S. senators.

The USPS is going to continue reviewing the facilities during the interim period to include the public input meetings such as the one in Augusta on Thursday. They hope this time will help “facilitate the enactment of comprehensive postal legislation.”

The financial situation and decrease in mail volume, the USPS will continue to take the necessary steps to reduce costs and increase their revenue.

In addition to the meeting in Augusta regarding the closure of the processing facility, the town of Ward, S.C., will also be having a meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. regarding the closure of their post office.
