Mayor warns of federal debt debate's impact on Atlanta airport
ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says the nation's busiest airport could be impacted if Congress fails to resolve the debt limit debate.
Already, the final $10 million payment for the construction of the fifth runway at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport has been delayed.
Reed says he was given permission to discuss the situation at the airport within the last 48 hours, and warned that he has been informed of "a number of ways" the city could be affected by a government shutdown, though he did not elaborate on specifics. He urged Congress to "do its work and get a deal."
Congress went home Friday without averting a partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration. As a result, more than 4,000 FAA employees were furloughed, including about 330 in metro Atlanta.
