COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- It's official -- Bass Pro Shops is coming to our area. The retailer is bringing hundreds of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars along with it and people can hardly wait.
"Columbia County is going to have a Bass Pro Shop," said Ron Cross, Columbia County commissioner, to rounds of applause.
But it's a lot more complicated than putting on a hat.
Plans to bring the large retailer to Columbia County have been in the works for a while now. The 50,000-square-foot facility will be at the intersection of I-20 and Flowing Wells Road.
Folks are looking forward to it, including Heath Fisher, owner of Hometown Sports. His sporting goods store sells some of the same things Bass Pro will sell, and he's just down the road from the new location.
"There will be some overlap, but I'm actually looking forward to Bass Pro Shops coming to the area," Fisher said. "Help boost our economy a little bit, provide some jobs. And I can actually go shopping at Bass Pro Shops for my hunting and fishing needs."
And he's not the only one looking forward to hitting Bass Pro Shops.
Jenny Jones spends most of her free time outdoors.
"Whenever the weather permits, whenever it's nice out and whenever I don't get sunburned," Jones said. "I've been biking since I was 3."
Jones says she's looking forward to having a more specialized store to shop for her outdoor needs -- on one condition.
"It depends on how the prices are! I know exactly what I want," she said. "So, that's where we're going."
Shoppers won't be the only ones to benefit.
Bass Pro Shops will hire up to 300 people and generate millions in tax revenue for Columbia County.
The store plans on opening its doors by fall 2014 or spring 2015.
If you want to apply, the company says to be patient. News 12 will be on your side with the hiring details as soon as they are announced.
