CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Belk announced a major expansion and remodeling of its fashion department store at Martintown Plaza in North Augusta, S.C. The $3.5 million project will allow the store to expand merchandise assortments and offer new brands and styles of shoes, accessories, fashion apparel and home merchandise.
All shops located adjacent to the Belk store on both sides, and previously occupied by Just Beds, CitiFinancial and Goodwill, will be combined with the main store and completely renovated. The store's size will increase by 20,000 square feet of space to a total of 64,000 square feet.
The fully-renovated store will feature a modern new shopping environment with the latest display fixtures, new tile flooring, ceilings and energy-efficient lighting, as well as completely remodeled restrooms and fitting rooms.
Construction is underway and will be completed in September prior to the store's grand re-opening on October 10. The store will remain open throughout the project.
"We're updating our store from top to bottom and creating an exciting new shopping experience for our loyal customers in the North Augusta community," said Stella Northington, store manager. "The expansion and renovation will provide customers with a modern retail layout, decor and merchandise presentation and allow us to expand assortments and add new selections throughout the store."
For example, the size of the ladies shoe department will increase more than double to over 4,000 square feet of space, and the men's shoe department will more than triple in size. Other departments gaining selling space will include women's sportswear, suits, special sizes, dresses, women's accessories, cosmetics, men's clothing and children's apparel.
The men's area of the store will grow by 45 percent with the addition of new Izod, Chaps and Columbia shops, and the home store will expand by 72 percent to more than 8,000 square feet of space.
The cosmetics department will be completely renovated with new display cases and fixtures featuring a new "open sell/assisted sell" concept for Clinique, Estée Lauder and Lancome products designed to make shopping easier and more convenient.
The renovated store's new modern jewelry and accessories departments will also feature "open sell" fixtures, making it easier for customers to make their jewelry, watches and sunglasses selections. A number of new brands will be added as a result of the store expansion and will be announced prior to the grand reopening date.
"These improvements demonstrate our ongoing commitment to be the department store of choice in our community," Northington said. "We want to satisfy the Southern lifestyle fashion needs of our customers like no one else and deliver the fashion they desire and the value they deserve."
Belk has served the Augusta, Ga., community since 1934, and opened the first North Augusta, S.C., store in 1951. The store at Martintown Plaza opened in 1993.
News 12 has confirmed that the store will add 10 to 15 jobs in the fall due to the expansion. You can find Belk's career website here.
