AIKEN CTY., S.C. -- Aiken County residents should be receiving their notice that real property reassessments will be implemented. According to its website, over 100,000 notices were mailed on Thursday by the Assessor’s Office.

The office wants to inform homeowners and other property owners of the reassessment process, so they have posted their 2010 Reassessment Guide on their website.

They want owners to know that reassessments are required by state law. This is done to determine the change in the market value of property over a certain period of time.

Reassessments are used to make sure all property owners are paying taxes in proportion to the value of their owned property. They are not designed to increase county revenue.

The laws state that the revenue generated by a reassessment “cannot be higher than the previous year’s revenue.” Some people will see increases, some will see decreases and others will see little to no change.

State law gives you 90 days to file an appeal with the County Assessor's Office if they disagree.
