COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Legislators in South Carolina want the three commissioners running the state Employment Security Commission gone after a series of flaps.
Legislators on Thursday reacted to news that the jobless benefit agency faced nearly $1 million in state penalties for not paying income taxes withheld from unemployment checks and doesn't know how much it owes the Internal Revenue Service.
State Rep. Jim Merrill of Daniel Island said if the commissioners don't quit they'll be removed by an overhaul of the jobless benefits agency that legislators are rushing to pass.
And on Thursday, state Sen. Greg Ryberg noted that the agency appears to not have anyone in charge. Ryberg urged his Senate colleagues to hurry their consideration of a bill that puts the agency under the governor's control.
