Morning Money Matters: Falling Fares

News 12 This Morning; February 25, 2009

Have you checked airfares lately? You might be pleasantly surprised.

Looks like we have a game of dominos going on with the airline industry, and you're the winner.

Fares have fallen recently, but word is they may drop even more across the board. Discount carrier Airtran Airways is the instigator here. The company has launched a sale on tickets to all its destinations for flights through the middle of the fall.
That is the first domino.

Now, many other airlines are following suit. American and Continental are matching the cuts on routes where they compete with Airtran, and Jetblue says it'll do the same.

Experts say locking in the lower fares so far in advance is unusual, but you can blame, or I guess in this case, thank the economy.

So, check it out. Now might be a good time to snag a deal.
