We are now less than three months away from the dreaded tax day. I know; it sneaks up every year, doesn't it. However, here's something the Internal Revenue Service hopes will lessen the blow a little.
This time around, you can prepare and e-file your taxes for free, no matter what your income is. Last year, the I.R.S. had strict guidelines on who could use the free tax-prep software but not anymore. The government is even listing participating companies on a website for you. That list just went up on Friday.
You need to read the fine print, though. Some won't let you file if you make more than $56,000 a year, but the government made sure there is a free site on the list that will work for everyone. Some will only do federal, but some will do state too, so again, it might take a little checking on your part.
