AUGUSTA--The economy is hitting a lot of industries pretty hard, but there is one that's actually on the rise, used computers. Many used computer dealers have actually seen a tremendous rise in business. The economy may be down, but business is up for them.
Used computers can end up being a great deal for you with big savings. But they are turning into big business for some computer store owners.
Charles Kelly is no stranger to the used computer game, but he's never seen sales quite like this.
"Used computer sales are up nearly 40% over this time last year." he told us.
Charles' Computer Exchange and other businesses say people are looking at computers as a way to tighten the old financial belt these days.
"You really, in many cases, end up with a cleaner machine if it's been done properly. A lot of machines from the big box stores come loaded down with all those free offers." he explained.
And those offers can really slow things down.
"They're a bit cheaper and I think you get the same value."
That's what Seth Tharan has to say about used computers. He's an experienced used computer buyer, but he says nowadays buying used is the only way for him.
"The economy has a lot do with it." he explained.
So how do you make sure you get a quality computer without paying too much?
First, do some homework and pick out a type you like. Then shop around.
Make sure you get a warranty, a legitimate copy of an operating system like windows vista or xp and also that you can return it. Lastly, make sure you don't pay more than market price.
How do you do that?
Ebay. That's a good place to get an idea of how much a type of computer costs.
Charles says that's a way to find a computer than can fit any budget. "People are looking for the cheapest way to buy a good machine."
