Unclaimed money adds up to big bucks

January 8, 2009

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC---News 12 is your Big Money Monday station. Now, new figures released by the South Carolina State Treasurer's Office show just how much people are getting from unclaimed property.

The Office returned over $12,000,000 last year, including almost $321,000 in Aiken County.

That's an increase of nearly $4,000,000 over 2007 statewide.

The Treasurer's office holds property totaling about $300,000,000 for individuals and businesses. Examples of unclaimed funds include uncashed payroll checks, dormant savings and checking accounts, abandoned stocks and bonds, unclaimed insurance proceeds, forgotten utility deposits and more.

Mondays on News 12 First at Five and News 12 at 11 we show you the names of people in Georgia and South Carolina who have unclaimed property. You can also see the phone numbers to call for more information. The information is also on wrdw.dot.com under the
