Taking a few steps to become a better consumer can make your life a lot easier next year. And it may even keep trouble from knocking on your doorstep.
First off, get a free copy of your credit report at http://annualcreditreport.com. There is no better way to stay on top of your credit than by keeping track of your credit report.
Second, stay safe online. Make sure your security software is up to date and that it's being used. This can go a long way to protecting you in cyberspace.
Third, get registered with the Do Not Call list. It's as simple as a phone call to get those telemarketers to stop calling you. Click here for more info: www.donotcall.gov
Fourth, save your energy. From buying energy efficient appliances or just putting in a few fluorescent lightbulbs; any effort can make a huge difference both on your bill and for the world.
Fifth, be skeptical. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Whether it's someone offering you some free money through snail mail or e-mail or maybe some bogus health scams, remember, there's no free lunch.
Lastly, report rip-offs with the Federal Trade Commission. If they don't know about it, they cannot investigate. Any and all complaints can help get the bad guys off the streets.
