COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The cost of electricity is going up in South Carolina. State utility regulators agreed Wednesday to allow South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. to implement a midyear rate increase.
The agreement allows SCE&G to charge customers an additional 6 percent to cover its increased costs for the coal and natural gas it uses to generate electricity. That was half the increase the company initially requested.
The agreement was brokered by the Office of Regulatory Staff, which serves as a watchdog on utility cases.
According to the office, typical customers using 1,000 kilowatt hours a month would be charged about $6 more each month. The agency said that would result in a monthly bill of about $114.
