Aide says Bush "open minded" about more stimulus

October 21, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush may be open to a new round of economic stimulus.

Press Secretary Dana Perino now says the president is "open minded" about a fresh dose of stimulus, and will consider what Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told lawmakers yesterday.

Bernanke says a "protracted slowdown" is likely, and the economy may need another boost.

White House officials had warned that much of what Democrats propose would not do much good, and Perino says Bush still wants to see details before committing to anything.

Today, aides say Bush will tell a conference on global development that America will not cut back its support for the fight against poverty, ignorance and disease. He'll say the global economic crisis means the poorest of the poor will be more vulnerable than ever.
