COLUMBIA CTY, Ga. --- Some new building projects are in the works in Columbia County. A new shopping center and retirement center were both recently approved by the planning commissioners.
The shopping center will go on three acres and will be about 20,000 square feet. It's going to have restaurants, hair salons, and a lot of things to make these neighborhoods more convenient.
Check it out from above. The land that was rezoned is near the intersection of Fury's Ferry and North Belair Road. Andy Allgood bought the land so that his community can have more places to shop, eat, and hang out. "I think it will be just a great little neighborhood gathering area," says Allgood.
On Thursday, the Columbia County Planning Commission approved the rezoning of the three acres to make it all commercial use. They understand how many people live in the area. "The foot traffic here will be tremendous. I anticipate this to be a pretty active center," says Jim Cox, a member of the Columbia County Planning Commission.
Allgood hopes construction can begin by the first of the year, and you can start enjoying the shops by this time next year. "We're looking at somewhere close to 20,000 square feet total, but not in one building," says Allgood.
It's not only a rezoned shopping center that was approved, a sixteen acre retirement community was also approved on Evans To Locks Road.
"We've got a need for that type of facility. As Columbia County grows and as our population ages," says Cox.
The retirement community will be near the intersection of Fury's Ferry and Evans To Locks Road. It will sit back from the road and give people living there and their neighbors privacy. So far, no complaints about the two projects. "Everybody that we've spoken to has been in favor of the development here. It's nice to see that folks are behind a project," says Cox.
Now the rezoning must still be approved by the Board of Commissioners, but everybody seems to be pretty confident that that will happen. Because of labor day they won't meet again until September 16th.
