Lexington, KY – For the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday night, the number five was not a good thing. The Lexington Legends scored five times in the fifth inning – all with two outs – to defeat the GreenJackets 9-5 and extend Augusta’s losing streak to five games. The loss was just Augusta’s sixth when scoring five runs or more in a game this season.

The GreenJackets have led all five games they’ve dropped in their current streak and this one was no different, as the GreenJackets carried a 3-2 lead into the fateful home half of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Nolan Fontana drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at three. Jordan Scott drew a second straight bases loaded walk to give the Legends a one-run lead and chase Augusta reliever Chris Marlowe.

Against DeMondre Arnold, Luis Alvarez singled home two runs to make it a 6-3 Legends advantage. Delino DeShields Jr. singled home a run after that to stretch the lead to 7-3. Marlowe (1-6) walked five and allowed six runs – five earned – in 1.2 innings to take the loss.

The GreenJackets had a good shot to get back into the game in the sixth, when a walk and a Garrett Buechele double put runners at second and third with nobody out. Brett Krill’s RBI groundout brought home a run to make it a three-run game, but the GreenJackets could do no further damage. Lexington scored two more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach while the GreenJackets added another in the ninth to make it a 9-5 game, but left two men on to end the game.

Lexington struck first, getting a run on three straight hits with one out in the first inning. Zach Johnson extended his league lead in the RBI category to 81 with a run-scoring single to put the Legends on top 1-0. Krill gave the GreenJackets a lead of their own in the second with a two-run homer – his fourth of the season – to put Augusta on top 2-1. In the third, the GreenJackets had two on with no one out, but could only push one run across on Devin Harris’s sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.

The Legends cut Augusta’s lead to 3-2 in the fourth on Fontana’s RBI groundout and would go on to score eight of the game’s final ten runs.
