When it comes to sports talent, Augusta holds its own with a lot of much bigger cities. That includes in the boxing ring.
The CSRA has produced world champions, and some of the up-and-comers look just as good. That's why Saturday was so special.
For the first time in four years, a boxing tournament was held right here in Augusta at May Park.
Greubel's Gym Boxing Coach Marciano Diaz wanted to give local guys a chance to shine in front of their hometown fans and families, and they did just that.
The awards weren't the biggest some of these guys have taken home, but the experience ranked right up there.
Greubel's boxer and Hephzibah graduate Fernando Bunch said, "This is awesome. I'm used to fighting out of state. I'm used to having nobody there but my coach and my team being my audience. Now, I got my family here. That just pumps me up even more, even more."
Butler's Justin DeLoach fights for the Augusta Boxing Club, and he added, "It feels good, man. A lot of people get to come out here and show me some support. I've been on the road. I know the last time I was doing something I was in Colorado so nobody really got to see me, but now I'm back home in Augusta."
Of course, some of the boxers are getting their first taste of competition.
Young kids and guys who haven't boxed for long are able to see what a big fight atmosphere is like, and it offers a drive to continue with the sport.
Working out in the gym can only take someone so far. Then, they need to get in the ring and see if it's for them.
Greubel's fighter Nathan Key has been a kickboxer for years but just recently picked up boxing.
This was his first fight, and he said, "Stepping in the ring and seeing how it goes. I just don't know how it goes. I've never had one. There's a pretty good crowd here. All my people are coming in from everywhere. I'm really excited. I'm not really nervous. It's just pure excitement."
The event crowned a champ in twenty different matches. The organizers say don't plan on waiting another four years before it happens again.
