Warrenton, Ga--Picture this scenario, you're the best athlete in the state at your sport, yet you almost never practice. Sounds like another kid who just isn't applying himself, but in the case of Warren County's Ed'Ricus Williams, not so much.
"If I can go seven foot, and the last time I jumped was at State the year before, and I feel like if I can do that with no practice, just imagine how I'd be if I could actually practice everyday," Williams said.
The old saying is practice makes perfect, but what happens when you can't practice? Williams is the best high jumper in the state of Georgia, but with no equipment at his school, he can't even practice during the season.
Williams added, "The majority of my time I just spend working on hurdles, trying not to think about the fact that I got a track meet coming up, and I haven't practiced high jump in I don't know how long."
The guy who doesn't practice cleared seven feet earlier this season, the second best height in the nation, and he's not planning on stopping there.
"I feel like if I don't break the Class A record, I feel like I won't be accomplished. I like to overachieve. It's at 7'2" right now, I'm at seven foot. Hopefully I can get it."
Senior year hasn't been nearly as smooth as one of his leaps over the bar. Football season was highlighted by the well known brawl at Hancock Central and basketball season was ended by the fall out from that same incident, so a state championship would be a welcome change.
"I found myself just trying to find that key point that can just cap off my senior year just right. I feel like I'm just this close to doing it," Williams said. "All I have to do is just break this record."
