DURHAM, N.C. - Senior centerfielder Marty Gantt has been named to the USA Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, the USA Baseball organization announced on Tuesday.
Gantt is one of 60 players nationwide, and the only representative of the Southern Conference, to be named to the watch list for the most prestigious award in college baseball, given to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
USA Baseball will narrow the list down to 30 semifinalists on May 29 and the winner will be announced on July 6.
A second team preseason All-SoCon selection, Gantt currently leads the Southern Conference with a batting average of .394. His league-best 49 runs rank 14th in the nation, while Gantt also leads the league in doubles (18) and on-base percentage (.495). He is second in the conference in stolen bases (24), walks (30) and slugging percentage (.647).
A native of North Augusta, S.C., Gantt not only shows his production at the plate and speed on the base paths, he has been the playmaker in the middle of the Cougars outfield. Gantt has only committed one error all season while making several spectacular diving catches to save runs.
