CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson has hired former North Carolina State assistant Mike Reed to coach defensive backs.

Tigers coach Dabo Swinney announced the hire Friday. Reed spent the past six years with the Wolfpack. He takes over the Clemson position that opened up when Charlie Harbison left to join Auburn.

Reed also spent five seasons coaching in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, working with defensive backs, special teams and quality control.

While at North Carolina State, Reed coached David Amerson, who finished third all-time in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 18 interceptions.

Swinney says Reed was a good fit for Clemson because he understands the ACC and knows the Tigers' recruiting base.
