USC Aiken gets dominant win over Lander

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team picked up a dominating 89-63 Peach Belt Conference Homecoming victory over Lander on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.

The rout of Lander (7-15, 2-13 PBC) allowed USC Aiken (17-6, 13-3 PBC) to continue its hold atop the Peach Belt Conference East Division standings. The Pacers are also still in control in the race for the Peach Belt Conference regular-season crown.

USC Aiken basically led from start-to-finish in the 26-point win over Lander.

The Pacers entered halftime up by eight at 46-38. They would then outscore Lander 43-25 in the second stanza.

USC Aiken closed out its win shooting 49.1 percent (28-for-57) from the field as a team. The Pacers knocked down a lethal 46.4 percent (13-for-28) of their 3-point attempts as team. USC Aiken only missed one free throw on the night, connecting on 95.2 percent (20-for-21) of its attempts at the charity stripe.

Lander shot 42 percent (21-for-50) from the field in its loss to USC Aiken. The Bearcats could only manage to knock down 28.6 percent (4-for-14) of their 3-point attempts as a team. Lander connected on 81 percent (17-for-21) of its free throw attempts as a team.

The Pacers held a 38-23 rebound advantage in the game.

Three Pacers concluded the lopsided victory in double figures with Re’mon Nelson (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) leading the way with 22 points. Nelson was a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line in the game.

On a night in which he was honored for becoming USC Aiken’s all-time leader in assists, Nelson also secured six assists and three rebounds in addition to his game-best 22 points.

USC Aiken’s Jesse Seilern (Innsbruck, Austria/Kapfenberg HS) closed out his night with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The final Pacer in double figures, Santoine Butler (Augusta, Ga./Gardner-Webb) finished USC Aiken’s victory with 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Jareal Smith led a trio of Bearcats in double figures with 21 points.

Winners of 26 of its last 27 regular-season home games, USC Aiken will next welcome Armstrong Atlantic State to the Convocation Center on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
