School officials vow to re-inspect metal detectors

ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta school officials are vowing to re-inspect every metal detector in the school system, but the school board chairman is raising questions about how metal detectors are used -- and how often.

Atlanta Public School officials acknowledged Friday that metal detectors weren't working at Price Middle School when a 14-year-old student was shot and wounded last week. The shooting took place on campus, but outside the building in an area that's publicly accessible.

On Monday, WSB-TV reports that the school system's superintendent, board members and security chief all said the shooting exposed gaps in school security and a still-unknown number of broken metal detectors.

School Board Chairman Rueben McDaniel said he's worried the district might not have set policies for how or how often metal detectors are used.
